ICC world cup cricket

Post by Cynic »

I know we have quite a few Aussies on the board. Any of you guys watching the current cup? Being in the states, I don't feel like paying 150 bucks for 10-15 matches. This means I have to watch shoddy streaming from many unauthorized websites.

Even though, India has beat its most serious contender so far, Australia, in this case. As someone who was raised in India, the tension of a Indo-Pak semi-finals is palpable. It isn't at all a sporting event but a political event. The match starts at 3:30am EST and I will probably be up to watch it. But, on the same hand, I have to figure out a way to record it for my dad who has to work.

But other than that, this is just a thread about the cup itself. Is Australia big into cricket or is it just one of the minor sports that they play?

As for the World Cup, interest seems to have died off once Aus was eliminated.

Cricket is the big summer sport. In terms of participation, I know a lot of kids that play soccer/rugby/league/afl during the winter and cricket or surf life saving (nippers) during the summer. As a watched sport, it's not as big as it was. At one point the rights to the big cricket series we're most interested in (the Ashes) was sold off to a minor broadcaster. I think interest has grown since we stopped winning. It's still a 'big' sport here, but it has nothing like the level of support from India, Pakistan or even England (possibly even South Africa).

Personally, I couldn't give a dam.
